Kings Boys Four and Five went head-to-head in a highly anticipated, high-energy, edge-of-your-seat kind of match at the Western Basketball Conference (WBC) grand final on Saturday, September 14.
There was always rivalry between the two Kings teams, this intensified when both won their semi-finals on Saturday, September 7.
Kings Boy’s five had won six games in a row before the grand finals.
Oliver, Miles, Yusuke and Rafferty are the highest-scoring players in Boy’s Five.
Oliver, William, Rafferty, and Miles each achieved impressive-to-watch 3-pointers throughout the season.
These skills are high-level and make a match so exciting to watch.
During the second quarter of the grand finale, a hailstorm hit Moonah.
The game had to be paused due to the roaring sound of the tiny hailstones on the tin roof.
The hail even came through the vents.
Once the hail had been mopped up play began only to be stopped again by a power outage, causing the scoreboard to stop working.
Despite the setbacks, Boys Five kept a consistent lead throughout the fast-paced game. The final score was 28-36, with Kings Boys Five coming out on top.
“I have never played basketball but watched the Tassie Devils play at Kingborough in the 1980s and a bit of Micheal Jordan on TV,” said Coach John.
“So, I was a little overwhelmed and really out of my comfort zone.”
John came from a soccer background and had coached many kids’ teams so he thought there would be some common themes he could lean on.
“And heaps of short basketball training videos,” he said.
“When we started, I had some goals for the team; no one in the team was more important than anyone else; everyone would get equal court time; everyone would have a voice that would be heard; we respect and support each other and are respectful to our opponents and the officials and that we have fun.
“It seemed to work pretty well!”
The WBC season goes from May to September, with all U14 games played at the Moonah Sports Centre.
